Although not an official trail system, Buffaloland still has a lot to offer as it is home to the only herd of plains bison living on the Island. The park is located on Route #4 Commercial Road, across from the Harvey Moore Wildlife Sanctuary. You may ask yourself why PEI has a herd of plains bison since they are not a native animal? The answer to that is, back in 1973, the original herd was a given as a gift from the Province of Alberta to Islanders to help mark their 100th anniversary as Canadians.
The herd has since grown from its original breeding pair to about 50. If you’re lucky, you can catch them grazing in the open fields, but on particularly hot days or stormy weather, they prefer to take shelter in the woods where you cannot see them. A path between fields leads to a lookout tower that gives a bird’s eye view of the whole park and there is plenty of open space to have a picnic, play lawn games, or just hang out and take pics of other wildlife in the area!! Alternatively, you can cross the road to visit the Harvey Moore Wildlife Sanctuary where you are guaranteed to see some wildlife and wait for the bison to come out into the open.
